PARKVIEW BUSHCARE GROUP

The origin of the Group:

Late 1998 we saw an advertisement in the Albert & Logan News by the Logan City Council seeking Bush care Volunteers, we contacted them, indicating our willingness to join as did several others from our neighborhood. After attending an induction course we agreed to form a group and Margaret and I landed the job of team leaders.
There are about 500 Parks around Logan City. More than thirteen Groups are operating at present of which the Parkview Group is the largest and most acitive.
During the latter part of 1999 the Logan City Council purchased a 133ha block adjacent to Parkview Park referred to as portion 238, an environmentally significant block of land greatly increasing the Park. We resigned as team leaders in August 2001

What the Group has done so far:

On the 7th February 1999, as a group under the guidance of Logan City Council Bush Regeneration Officer Kylie Withers, we assessed the area for wildlife, native fauna and weed investation. We selected an area to clear in two stages from Lantana, Singapore Daisy and other weeds by brush cutting and manual labour. After mulching by the City Council the initial planting required over 700 plants, shrubs and trees and the placing of staked plastic protectors around a number of them (to stop the koalas eating the tops of them).

At a subsequent Sunday we cleared a further area of 1000m2 by brush cutting, mulched it and planted about 500 trees.

Who is involved:

In August 2001 about twenty adults of all ages and several children are involved. Our largest turnout (May 2000 working bee) was 18. There is an enthusiastic, dedicated core of families leading the way. We receive great support from the City Council in all ways and during the first couple of years in particular from their officers directly involved. Our elected City Council Member Darren Power used to attend our early working bees.

Future Plans of the Group

Publicity

Notices of the Group's activities appear on the newly erected Notice Board at the lower entrance to the Park and notices of activities are also published in the City Council advertisement of the Albert and Logan News.

Best and worst of our involvement:

By far the best is the friendly and helpful attitude of all involved and getting to know each other. Next is be the satisfaction of seeing the results not the least of the clearing but the planted trees and shrubs.

The worst was the frequent pulling up of plant, trees. shrubs and plastic plant protrectors and their stakes by mindless vandals. It was disheartening to have to replant, those which you could find, some a second or third time.Fortunately this problem has somewhat abated. Disappointing is that some residents adjoining the Park dump some of their garden waste in the park, in particular lawn clippings.
... Flood...As a result of a major downpour the resulting flood destroyed a large number of our trees and plants.
